Kandinsky "Several Circles"

Today’s episode Knocking Space saved Theatre Intangible. It was August 2009, and Theatre Intangible just got banned from WRVU radio for the episode Get It On With Dave Cloud. We had no home. Everything was in limbo. I didn’t know what to do. I only knew that we had to keep recording, keep the momentum. So on 8/2/2009, eleven of us piled into my basement, armed with accordions, saxophones, trumpets, tubas, windsticks, harmonicas, toy flutes, real flutes, melodicas, shop vacs, air pianos, and voices; turned on the reel to reel; and kept Theatre Intangible alive.

With no place to broadcast the episode, I released it as a Mediafire download on our now-defunct Myspace page and kept recording new shows. In December of 2009, we premiered the podcast and website TheatreIntangible.com. Knocking Space remained unreleased in podcast form until now.

The episode was original titled On Air Volume 2, named after the first all-wind instrument improv, On Air. (Check it out here.)

Knocking Space features Charlie Rauh, Chris Rauh, Jamison Sevitts, Joe Hudson, Craig Schenker, Pimpdaddysupreme, Dave Maddox, Melody Holt, Gordon Roque, and Anthony William Herndon. I did the live mixing, some editing, and post production. This was the first thing I ever recorded on my Tascam 80-8 ½ reel to reel tape machine. We recorded in four 15-minute increments, mixing live, using two left/right tracks for each section.

The last two days have been hairy.  I took the above pictures a few blocks from my house.  Check out this video I took on my iPhone.  The basement where we record all the new Theatre Intangible improvs is currently lined with a few inches of water in one corner.  Luckily, not much is damaged.  But that’s more than I can say for other parts of the city, which are literally destroyed.

In brighter news, I’ve finally finished editing the Arclyte artist show (Theatre Intangible Podcast 18) contained herein for your listening pleasure.  I have often mentioned that Arclyte is my favorite local band.  The sparse baroque sounds of Arclyte members Chris Rauh, Charlie Rauh, and Craig Schenker go well with upturned cars and uprooted trees.

Arclyte is a Nashville/DC minimalist rock band reminiscent of Emily Haines and Low.  The Theatre Intangible session is the last Arclyte show for the foreseeable future.  Singer and bassist Chris moved to Washington DC the day after we recorded this.

It’s Sunday, January 10th, 2010 and today’s episode is The Sound of Teeth.

We recorded this episode in my basement on August 22nd, 2009 live on a Tascam 80-8 ½” 8 track reel to reel.  It’s taken me this long to edit it.  The Sound of Teeth features Charlie Rauh on Guitar, Chris Rauh on Bass, John Bohannon on Accoustic Guitar and Effects, John Westberry on Drums, and myself on Jenn Analog Synth and Field Recordings.   Some of the field recordings were pulled from Freesound.org. (See below for Freesound contributors.)  DaveX contributed the show narrative.  I did the live mixing, the post-mixing, and the editing.

The Sound of Teeth was the second episode we recorded on the reel to reel and the first of which to premiere on this podcast.  The sound of the tape gives the episode a real organic, textural quality – further explored by the addition of various forms of hiss & pop, such as vinyl clicks, mosquitoes, frying oil, and dirt in the volume knob of an old electric organ.   All of the performers on this episode really shine, and it’s one of our best yet.  It was a hell of a job to edit.  Enjoy.
